Golf in Gotland County

The surroundings of Visby also contain Gotska Golf Club and Lugnets Golfbana, yet neither simply repeats Kronholmen. Gotska is a relatively open 18-hole heath course with a documented Scottish influence. Lugnets gathers nine holes into a rural setting outside the town. Together they show how golf near Gotland's main urban centre can shift from seaside links ground to heath and countryside within a limited area.

In southeastern Gotland, När Golf Club pairs an 18-hole heath and links-style course with a separate six-hole course. The terrain remains open and close to the sea, but the course belongs firmly to a different part of the island. Farther inland in the south, Gumbalde Golf at Stånga follows an 18-hole parkland route. Its greener inland character forms a natural contrast with the exposed ground found at the coastal courses.

Slite Golf Club carries the geographical story to Gotland's eastern side. Its 18-hole course and separate three-hole short course were shaped around the existing ground. The island's golf is therefore not one repeated seaside formula. It ranges from links terrain beside the Baltic to open heath, rural nine-hole golf and inland parkland. Hole counts change just as much as the landscape, from three and six short holes to several complete 18-hole rounds.

Golf provides a clear route through Gotland's changing ground. Kronholmen begins on western links terrain; heath and countryside take over around Visby; the journey then reaches När's open southeastern coast and Slite's natural ground in the east. At Stånga, Gumbalde's greener parkland breaks with the exposed seaside settings. Hole counts range from the nine at Lugnets and Slite's three short holes to complete eighteen-hole rounds, but coast, heath and inland parkland are what make each part of the island feel different.
